How should you plan a living wall before hanging art?

14 March 2026 · Saanvi Home, Anantapuram

Framed folk-art painting of two deer hung above a sideboard, a living room wall art idea from Saanvi Home

Plan the wall before you buy the painting. Living room wall art works when the empty wall is measured first: its width, the furniture under it, and the height of an adult eye. At the Saanvi Home studio in Anantapuram we start there, then choose one piece that can hold the wall on its own.

How high should living room wall art hang?

Set the centre of the frame about 145 to 150 centimetres from the floor. That is a comfortable eye line when you are standing, and it still reads when you are seated. Above a sideboard, leave 15 to 20 centimetres of wall between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. The gap is what makes the painting look placed, rather than resting on the furniture.

How much wall should you leave around it?

A painting needs breathing room on both sides. On a wide living room wall, keep at least the width of the frame as empty wall to the left and right. If the piece would have to stretch from corner to corner to feel big enough, it is the wrong size. Choose a smaller work and let the plaster stay visible. That empty margin is part of the design.

One piece, or a pair?

Use one painting when the wall is the view from the door. A single folk-art frame, a tree, a pair of deer, a peacock, gives the room one subject. Add a second frame only when the wall is long enough for both to sit at the same height with a clear gap between them. Pairing is a separate decision, and it is covered in our note on hanging two paintings together.

Which handmade painting belongs there?

Indian home decor does not need a wall full of objects. A Bhil painting with a strong outline and a quiet ground carries a pale wall in daylight and still reads under a lamp at night. Match the frame to the furniture you already have: a dark frame on a light wall, hung level, is enough. If you want the whole room planned before anything is fixed, the interiors layouts start from the same measurement.

Questions we hear in the studio

How high should living room wall art be hung?

Hang the centre of the painting about 145 to 150 centimetres from the floor. If it sits above a sideboard, leave 15 to 20 centimetres between the furniture and the frame.

Is one painting enough for a living room wall?

Yes, when the wall is the first thing you see. One well-spaced piece reads more clearly than a row of small frames fighting for the same view.

What kind of wall art suits an Indian living room?

A handmade painting with a clear subject, such as a Bhil tree, deer, or peacock, holds a pale wall without needing a gallery of extra objects.
