How do you pair two paintings on one wall?

27 September 2026 · Saanvi Home, Anantapuram

Two framed Bhil paintings hung as a pair above a bed

Gallery wall ideas often start with too many frames. Two paintings, chosen as a pair and hung at one height, are enough for a bedroom or a living room wall. At Saanvi Home we hang Bhil works this way: related subjects, matching frames, and a gap you can measure with your hand.

How do you align a pair?

Mark the centre of the wall, then the centre of each painting. The two centres should sit on the same horizontal line, about 145 centimetres from the floor, or slightly higher over a headboard so the frames are not hidden by pillows. Leave 5 to 8 centimetres between the frames. If one painting is a little taller, align the centres rather than the top edges so the pair still feels level.

Which two paintings belong together?

Pick a shared ground and a shared frame. Two Bhil paintings, a tree and a harvest, or a peacock and a second folk scene, read as one thought. Mixing a bright folk painting with a photograph or a print breaks the pair, even when the frames match. Buy them together, or at least hold them side by side in the same light before you drill.

When is one painting the better gallery?

When the wall is short, or when the bed or sofa already fills the lower half. A single frame with space around it, as in the note on planning a living wall, is calmer than a pair that has to be squeezed. Two is a composition. Three, on a home wall, is usually a crowd. If the room itself is still undecided, plan it through the interiors layouts before you make holes.

Questions we hear in the studio

How far apart should two paintings hang?

Leave about 5 to 8 centimetres between the frames. Wider than that and they stop reading as a pair. Closer than that and the frames collide.

Should two paintings be the same size?

It is easier when they are close in height. Align the centres, not the tops, if one frame is slightly taller.

Is a two-piece gallery wall enough?

Yes. Two related paintings, such as a pair of Bhil works, are a complete gallery wall. A third frame is only useful on a much longer wall.
