Where should a lamp sit in a quiet corner?

Where should the lamp stand?
Set it on a side table at the arm of the chair or the end of the sofa, roughly 30 to 40 centimetres from where someone sits. That distance throws a pool of light onto a lap or a page. A floor lamp can stand in the same relationship if there is no table: close enough to reach, far enough that the shade does not touch a shoulder. The empty corner behind it can stay empty.
What height feels right?
Sit down before you decide. The lower edge of the shade should meet your eye, or sit just above it. A shade that towers over a low sofa lights the ceiling and leaves the seat dim. Painted shades, like the floral lamps in the studio, are meant to be seen as well as used, so do not hide them behind a tall plant.
Which lamp is for reading, and which is for the room?
A table lamp with a translucent shade is the reading light.
