How do you choose wooden home décor that lasts?

9 October 2026 · Saanvi Home, Anantapuram

Hand-carved wooden Buddha head, wooden home decor from Saanvi Home

Wooden home decor lasts when the piece is solid, the base sits flat, and the shelf is not in hard afternoon sun. Saanvi Home looks at those three things before the subject, whether the carving is a Buddha head, an owl, a Nandi, or a painted bird.

What should you check in the hand?

Weight first. A solid wooden showpiece feels dense for its size. A very light piece is often hollow or thinly turned, and the edges chip. Run a finger along the carving: snags mean the sanding was rushed. The base must not rock. Paint, when there is paint, should reach the corners without thick drips. Those checks take a minute and they matter more than a photograph.

Which wooden pieces belong in a home?

A carved Buddha head is a quiet object for a shelf in a living room or study. A wooden owl or a hand-painted Nandi can take a smaller ledge. Birds, a cow and calf, and other Channapatna figures work as gifts because they do not need a matching wall colour. Larger idols belong in the pooja corner described in our pooja room note, not crowded onto a television unit.

How do you keep the wood well?

Dust with a dry cloth. Keep water off the base. Do not stand the piece against a west-facing window where the sun heats one side all afternoon. Oil is rarely needed on a finished studio piece, and a random polish can darken painted detail. The wood collection is made to be lived with. One carving, with space around it, will outlast a row of small ones packed edge to edge.

Questions we hear in the studio

How can you tell if wooden home decor will last?

Lift it. A solid carving feels heavier than a hollow one. The edges should be smooth, the base should sit flat, and the paint should not flake at the corners.

Where should a wooden showpiece be placed?

On a shelf out of direct afternoon sun and away from a wet window. Leave space around the base so the carving can be dusted.

Are wooden handicrafts suitable as gifts?

Yes. A Buddha head, a painted owl, a Nandi, or a small Channapatna figure is a complete gift and does not depend on the colour of the walls.
